Description

Hello! My name is Sofiya, I am a Junior from American University in Washington, DC. I am currently pursuing a BA in International Studies at the School of International service with a thematic focus on Environmental Sustainability and Global Health.

I began tutoring middle school students as a freshman in high school, and continued to pursue this as a college student primarily tutoring for standardized test prep (SAT, Subject Tests, AP’s). I specialize in language tutoring, I am fluent in French and received a 5 on the French Language and Culture AP Exam. I am comfortable working with a wide variety of students as I possess excellent intercultural communication skills. My familiarity with the Common Application, the UC application, and College Essay and supplement writing are also strengths. I have experience proctoring the PSAT and SAT, and am familiar with tutoring for the different sections of the SAT ( Math or Evidence Based Reading and Writing).

One of my main goals in working with students is to implement creative ways for students to study and stay engaged. Due to the virtual format of tutoring at this time, I believe a crucial part of student’s success is to use strategies that allow them to continue to be effective during a time of uncertainty. For example, being able to study outside or in a different environment, setting up a reward system for assignment completion, and encouraging students to maintain contact with their peers. My goal in teaching these skills and others is to encourage students to maintain agency and leadership in their own learning, and to empower them as people with tools applicable to any point in their life.
